Altrusa provides scholarships to area students

Altrusa members honored this year's scholarship recipients and their families at a meeting on May 12, 2015. Five local students were selected to receive scholarships of $1,000 each.

Cheyenne Foster will be attending the Delta/Montrose Technical College studying early childhood education. Zane White from Olathe High School will attend the University of Alaska at Fairbanks studying fire science. Brenna Gaber from Montrose High School will attend Fort Lewis College.  She was planning to study agriculture business but that major is no longer offered, so she has selected a double major to approximate the same overall studies. Marisa Jahnke from Montrose High School will attend Colorado Mesa University studying counseling psychology and art education. Theresa Tafoya from Olathe High School will attend Regis University studying biology with a medical focus.

The scholarship review committee was extremely impressed with these five candidates and our entire Altrusa club wishes each of them great success in their future studies.

Season's Readings

With our annual Holiday Festival & Gifts fundraiser just barely behind us, Altrusa members are diving into our next service project for the year -- Season's Readings.

In partnership with local businesses, Altrusa helps collect new and gently-used children's books from the community. We contribute a considerable number of new books which we've purchased, and have a delightful time tying festive ribbons on the books so they can be distributed to children in our community.

Last year, we distributed around 2,000 books. We're told by the folks at Health & Human Services that the need is continuing to grow, so our goal is to surpass last year's totals. Members of the Montrose community have always been very generous with their donations, and we hope to ensure that all families in need of help this time of year can enjoy the gift of reading for their children.
